Description
Students will create a brochure using Publisher. The front cover will be an introductory page giving the student information and title, the inside of the brochure will contain the awards for Outstanding Male, Female, Supporting Female, Supporting Male, Setting, and Author. The back panel will be about the student’s favorite book, author or genre.

Teacher to Teacher Notes
This unit should begin in the classroom. Gather information from the students about good novels they have read.  Discuss novels that may have been read independently, or as a class.  These can be novels from middle school or outside of school reading.  Students can use a created graphic organizer for notes on each award. After all of the notes are collected, students can move to the computer lab and begin the Publisher brochure.

Materials
Students’ rough draft papers, Oscar graphic organizer, student guide brochure and sample brochure, notes on creating Publisher brochures.

Resources & Technology
Computer stations for each student (Computers should have Publisher and Internet Explorer)

Procedures/Activities
Classroom Activities: Before coming to the computer lab, conduct a lesson about the important aspects of outstanding characters.  Discuss that strong characters do not necessarily have to be a positive influence or a good person. Students may want to use the graphic organizer to brainstorm possible book awards for their brochure. Students should come to the computer lab with a storyboard of the information they want to include in the brochure. Storyboard pages should include where students want to include graphics.
