Topic: Making a Reading Web Site

ELA-Reading, Grade 8
Time Frame:
3-4 days (classroom) & 5-7 days (computer lab)

Essential Questions - When you have finished this assignment, you should be able to answer the following questions.

  • What steps are required to build an informational Web site? 
  • What makes written work outstanding?

The following instructions are designed to help you organize your work and meet all of the requirements. After you have created the Web pages, your work will be saved in your Portfolio folder. With your password and login information, friends from around the world will be able to view your project. Keep your password secure from other students in the District.

 Requirements for Web Page

Page 1 Title Page
This is the introductory page to your website and should include general information about yourself.  It’s sort of like you’re writing a little autobiography that tells people who you are and why you created this website.  You could tell about your hobbies, favorite things, family and friends, etc.  You never give out personal information that could allow someone to come find you.  In other words, don’t put your last name, address, or phone number, and don’t identify your friends’ or family members’ last names, addresses, or phone numbers.

  • link to page 3

  • at least 10 sentences about yourself  

Page 2  Book Awards Page
This page is for listing the awards that you would give in the following categories:  Best Novel, Outstanding Male Character, Outstanding Female Character, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Setting.  The awards will be listed as a bulleted list and should have at least one sentence following each award to explain why you chose that winner.

This page must include:

  • Title

  • graphic

  • background color 

  • text color 

  • link to page 1

  • link to page 3

  • a bulleted list with the five awards

  • at least one sentence of explanation for each award

Page 3  Favorite Book, Author, or Genre Page
The final page of your website will be about either your favorite book, author, or genre (type of book).  You should have at least 10 sentences. You might want to write about why you like the book, author, or genre, and why you think other people would also enjoy it. You could include a list of similar books, or other books in the same genre, etc. You must include a link to the Internet on this page.  You could link to a specific site about the book or author, or you could link to an on-line bookstore.
