"Last
year my students completed this project without this Web site
organizer. I had found the idea in a workbook from a teacher
supply store. I saw that it included a rubric so I thought it
would be pretty good. The rubric was simply a grading scale of
1-10 that could be used to score the project, but it did not
include any descriptors. I sent home a one page summary of the
project and I received several complaints from parents who were
unclear about my expectations. The work submitted by the
students was also greatly varied. Unfortunately, many students
spent most of their time on the "cut and paste" parts
of the assignment and failed to meet the instructional
standards. I'm certain it was because I had failed to
communicate the standards that were important. This year's
products showed a tremendous improvement. Since this Web site was
available to everyone, parents were better informed about the
purpose of the assignment and the students' work was much closer
aligned to the standards."

"My
daughter completed the project in Mrs. Gains' classroom. The
most interesting part of the project for her was completing the
Venn diagram where she compared the main and secondary
characters' experiences to her own. She gained empathy and
perspective from the project. Parents are often annoyed when
their children come home with assigned projects, but this one
very effectively allows students to demonstrate understanding of
many required standards."
