Champaign Teachers Invited to participate in Illinois Technology Leadership Institute (ITLI) -
Westview teachers David Bales and Bethany Nuese, with Principal Trevor Nadrozny and Instructional Technology Specialist Susan Sheahan, are participating with other teachers across the state in ISBE sponsored training.  These two Westview teachers are piloting the use of Interactive Whiteboard technology with digital projectors and document scanners.  The teachers are supported by Susan Sheahan with lesson planning, and professional development offered in the school and with ISBE.  The teachers are also supported by an International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) mentor, and a local working with ISBE (former Champaign teachere now Technology Department webmaster Michael Marassa).  The Westview teachers will focus on technology integration into current curricula, as well as Technology Standards for Students (NETS-S) and Teachers (NETS-T, Illinois’ Content Area Technology Standards for All Teachers ICATS).

Computer Science for Kids
Students in elementary and middle schools are getting a taste of computer programming by using an innovative object oriented programming language called SQUEAK. Students are using similar programming commands used by computer scientists and electronic game developers to create their own multimedia projects. “Our students are being given opportunities to use the computer the way scientists and engineers are using them today, “ says Kathleen Harness, Gifted & Enrichment teacher at Dr. Howard Elementary School.

Web-Based Video Conferencing
Unit 4 is the beneficiary of a partnership with the Educator's Knowledge Center, an integrated system of online tools for sharing information and resources for students, teachers and administrators. TRECC is a program of  the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, funded by the Office of Naval Research and administered by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. This partnership allows Unit 4 students and educators to connect with peers across the nation and with experts in varied fields. The District wishes to offer our thanks and appreciation to Nancy Komlance for bringing this exciting learning opportunity to Unit 4 students. Unit 4 is compiling a list of experts in various fields that are interested in participating in a teacher-facilitated video conference with students. If you are interested in participating in this venture, e-mail Susan Sheahan at sheahasu@champaignschools.org.

Unit 4 Online Curriculum Outlines
Curriculum Coordinators have worked diligently with Unit teachers and administrators to place curriculum outlines online for parent access and review. Students who transfer to another school within Unit 4 due to a change in residency can expect to move ahead seamlessly through the curriculum. The following chart includes timelines for the delivery of curriculum. Although teaching strategies may differ, the same curriculum is delivered consistently according to these timelines.

Online Course Credit
High school students in Unit 4 have the option of completing some curriculum requirements by using online curriculum resources including NovaNet and NOVEL.

  • NovaNet provides opportunities for credit recovery in a classroom setting. Both Unit 4 high schools and Columbia School have student licenses to NovaNet.
  • NOVEL is a state funded online curriculum option for students participating in the Truants' Alternative Optional Education Program (TAOEP). It offers flexibility in time and for students needing credit recovery for graduation. Students interested in learning more about the program should contact their school Attendance Outreach Worker.
