Strategies for Searching the Web

If you want to retrieve the best Web documents when you search the Web, then you need to spend some time learning successful methods for searching the Web. I recommend that you get to know at least one search engine well, that is, learn the advance searching techniques for a particular search engine and become familiar with its limitations as well as its qualities. The following tutorials will help to guide you through the Web searching process.

Exploring the World-Wide Web is an introduction to the Internet and World Wide Web. This tutorial will explain URLs, the basics of using Netscape, how to use indexes and search tools on the Web, and basic Hypertext Markup Language(HTML). This Web site is maintained by the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

ICYouSee Guide to Critical Thinking About What You See on the Web. This site contains a concise overview of the things you need to bear in mind when using Web resources for research, a practice assignment to try out what you have learned, and links to other Web sites for more information on evaluating Web resources. This Web site is maintained by a librarian at Ithaca College Library.

Searching the World Wide Web: Strategies, Analyzing your topic, Choosing search tools and How to Choose the Search Tools You Need are two tutorials that will show you how to develop a search strategy that will get you to the Web documents you need. You will learn when to successfully use Meta-Search Engines, subject directories, and Webliographies. And how to refine your searches by using Boolean operators, truncation and +/- techniques.
