Champaign Central High School Girls Soccer

2008 – Coach Kara Wilkin.   The 2008 Central Girls golf team was able to get off to a quick start, going 2-0-1 during the first three games. After some injuries involving some key players, the lady maroons faced some tough spots in the middle of the season. After defeating Decatur St. Theresa, Danville, and a shutout win against Decatur Eisenhower, the girls ended their season with a record of 5-13-2. The girls lost in the first round of Sectionals against Centennial. With many injuries, and few girls on the bench, Central's girls gave their best effort and heart into the final game. Leaving the team this year are seniors Sunita Karan, Libby Beck, and Nayelli Lopez. Even with the struggles through the season, Freshman Ellen Moe and Sophomore Mia Gilliam were on the All-Conference Honorable mention list. Juniors Sarah Moe and Amanda Greco made the All-Conference team.

 

2007 – Coach Kara Wilkin.  Central girls soccer kicked it up a notch in 2007, scoring more goals than in past seasons. The team finished with a final record of 9-8-2 and a conference record of 4-5. They were led by 8 seniors including Ann Pataky, Kelsey Tappendorf, Janelle Yambert, Liz Ceperly, Liz Clegg, Brianna Bugbee, Andrea Carmichael.

 

2006 – Coaches Kara Wilkin and Phil Wilder.  The Lady Maroons 2006 soccer team faced difficulties because of injuries and loss of players. The girls had to rebuild their team from the ground up and put in a 110 percent effort to win seven great victories against powerhouse teams such as Bloomington and Centennial. Early on in the season they had to play against many of the top teams. However, as the season progressed , the team improved with practice and determination. The team captains were Jackie Ford, Sidney Sheehan, Liz Clegg, and Alexis Johnson.

 

2005 – Coaches Wilson and Browning.  The 2005 girls soccer team had a new beginning, starting with their new coach Zach Browning. The team had a shaky start early in the season, but after making several position changes the girls won 10 of their last 14 games. They finished their season with a record of 11-8-2. They had several great conference victories including wins against Centennial, Eisenhower, and Bloomington. The team was led by six seniors, including captains Kyle Browning, Ali martin, and Meghan Martindale. The captains continually led the Varsity team to victory. Kyle Browning won All Sectional, All Conference and News Gazette All Area first team and was also the team MVP. The  girls put in a lot of time and effort and showed tons of enthusiasm. they tied for 4th in the Big 12 Conference after playing four strong teams. We look forward to seeing another exciting season next year.

 

2004 – (16-4-3)(8-0-2) Coach Adam Jenkins had the best season in school history, fewest losses and highest winning percentage (.800), won the Twin City championship and Big 12 title, Natalie Dixon, Carrie Peters, and Kyle Browning received the All-Sectional Award, the All-Conference Award, and News-Gazette All-Area Award, won Regionals and advanced to the Sweet 16.

 

2003 – (14-9-1) (5-4-1) Coach Adam Jenkins, Asst. Coach Kirby Crawford.  The girl’s soccer team of 2003 may have struggles at the beginning of the season, but they improved their play when it mattered most.  With seniors Elise McAuley, Elizabeth Galaras, and Ana Eisenman, the Central varsity ended up with an overall record of 14-9-1 and a conference record of 5-4-1.  After their hard work and effort, they won all of their Regional games and then came out and won their Sectional.  After fighting through a tough season of ups and downs, they made their way to the IHSA State Finals Tournament in Naperville, Illinois.  Although they put up a hard fight, they were unable to advance past their first game. 

 

2002 – Coaches Adam Jenkins and Kirby Crawford. The 2002 girls’ soccer team had a winning season with a lot of fresh talent.  The team had lost six starters for a total of eight seniors.  The team advanced to the semifinals of the Carbondale Tournament as well as the Sectional semifinals.  Junior Elise McAuley was selected as an All-State player.  Although the team lost some dominant seniors, they have many things to look forward to for the 2003 season.

2001 (20-6) Coaches Adam Jenkins, Sally Glen, and Kirby Crawford.  Captains: Erica Peters, Sara Arnold, and Liz Washburn.  The 2001 season posted more firsts for the Central girls’ soccer team.  Returning all 11 starters, the Maroons had another record breaking season.  The Maroons finished 20-6, the most wins ever in girls’ soccer history.  The Maroons also finished 2nd in the Big 12 as well as in the Sectional and won Regionals beating Warrensburg-Latham (11-0), Charleston (6-1), and Normal U-High (2-1) in a penalty kick shoot-out.

 

2000 – (14-5-6) Coach Adam Jenkins, 2nd seed in sectionals, 3rd in Big 12, regional championship, 1st Central girl’s soccer team to reach sectional championships, next year will return with entire starting line-up, Captains Sara Arnold, Julie Sonka, and Erica Peters.

 

1999 – (12-5-2) Coaches Adam Jenkins, John May, Mary-Margret Mitchell.  Captains Tara Peters, Meghan Winkel, and Julie Sonka.  The girls’ soccer team finished 4th in the Big 12, and were the 4th seed in sectionals.  Central’s team was also among the youngest in the area.  Many coaches were surprised with the outstanding record and talent.

1998 – (8-9-2) Coaches Garry Laidlaw and Adam Jenkins.  Captains: Anya Pavia, Jenny Cripe, and Tara Peters.  MVP: Molly Krol. Tara Peters and Molly Krol were All-Area Conference and all Sectional players.  Anya Pavia and Meghan Winkel were all-Conference.  Tara led the team with six goals.  Erica Peters and Liz Washburn followed with 5. 

 

1997 – (9-8-1) Coaches Mike Malone and Garry Laidlaw.  Captains: Annie Tock, Sarah Nizzi, and Anya Pavia.  MVP: Annie Tock.  Senior Annie Tock scored a season total of 17 goals.  After two early wins the team leveled off, then dipped to three tough defeats against quality teams.  Towards the end of the season they peaked, scoring 27 goals in the last seven games. 

 

1996 – (6-7-1) Coaches were Mike Malone and Garry Laidlaw.  Captains: Annie Tock and Sarah Nizzi.  MVP’s: Sarah Nizzi and Annie Tock.  Individual Outstanding Performances:  Sarah Nizzi had two hat-tricks (3 goals), one against Centennial and the other against Decatur St. Teresa.  Annie Tock scored a last minute goal to salvage a tie in a game with Centennial.  Whitney McGill and Corey Young as well as juniors Sarah Nizzi and Annie Tock won All-Conference honors.  Sophomore Micki Pulliam earned honorable mention.  Central’s first girls’ soccer season was a story of two teams.  For the first half of the season, the team struggled to learn the game, as many athletes had never played before.  They also strived to become a cohesive soccer team.  The 6-0 win over Centennial marked the beginning of a 5-2-1 stretch to finish the season with the two losses to powerful Bloomington.  In their first ever regional competition, the 10th seed Central smashed the 7th seed Springfield Lamphier 6-0 before falling to 2nd seed Bloomington 6-2.
