Murder in Athens

Section 1 of Murder in Athens comes in three parts. In first part, stude= nts compare and contrast the current judicial system in the U.S. with the Athenian just= ice system. In the second part, students will write and perform skits to re-create the events that led to= the actual trial. The third par= t is a re-creation of the trial itself, which took place some time between 450 a= nd 411 B.C.

In Section 2 of Murder in Athens students will be using modern day forensics (at the sixth grade level) to examine the “evidence” surrounding the crime. At various stations students wil= l:

- make concise and objective observations of the crime scene.

- use their observa= tions to draw inferences about the crime scene.

- distinguish betwe= en fingerprints with whorls, arches, and loops.

- examine two sets = of fingerprints and determine which fingerprints match.

- apply their skill= s using the microscope to compare and contrast various hair samples, and conclude which are a match.

- apply their skill= s using the microscope to compare and contrast various crystal samples, and concl= ude which are a match.

- apply their measu= rement and observation skills to determine which footprints are a match.

- demonstrate their knowledge of mass and density by comparing whether liquids sink or float = in a given liquid.

- test mystery powd= ers using litmus paper to determine where the liquid falls on the pH scale, a= nd compare the liquids to find a match.

- use a Greek alpha= bet key to decipher a message written in Greek.

- use paper chromat= ography to test the ink in pens to find a match to a known ink sample.=

- use their knowled= ge about Greek Mythology and logical reasoning ability to read to the statements of witnesses and match the suspect to the statement.

- apply their measu= rement skills to determine the mass of a pouch using a triple beam balance.=

- write a forensic = evidence report, describing how the evidence points to the “real” culp= rit.
