lLLINOIS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION  -  SCHOOL REPORT CARD

The Better Schools Accountability Law of 1985 requires public school districts to provide school report cards each year to parents (and others upon request). This report card contains information about your school and your district in the following categories: student characteristics, the instructional setting, the school district's finances, and student performance on state assessments.

The state assessments are designed to measure student's progress in mastering the Illinois Learning Standards. These Standards, adopted in 1997, express what Illinois students should know and be able to do. The Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) and the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) were launched to measure student achievement of the Illinois Learning Standards. In addition, the Illinois Measure of Annual Growth in English (IMAGE) assesses the progress of limited-English-proficient students in attaining the English-language skills needed to achieve the Learning Standards. For students with disabilities whose Individualized Education Programs (IEP's) indicate that participation in the ISAT and the PSAE would not be appropriate, the Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) measures progress toward achievement of the Standards through a portfolio process.

School Improvement Plan for Jefferson Middle School 2005

Areas of Success:
Jefferson Middle School continues to find success in several academic areas.  Over 68.8% of the student population met or exceeded standards on all ISAT tests compared to the state average of 64.9%.  In 2005, specific academic areas of success include 71.8% in Science, 72.1 % in Reading and 65.3 % in Mathematics.  All school scores are above district averages.

Areas of Improvement:
Although composite scores of Jefferson Middle School students are strong, disaggregate scores indicate some student groups are not meeting standards.  Jefferson Middle School’s improvement plan focuses on academic goals in the areas of reading and mathematics for all three grade levels.  The centerpiece of the school improvement plan is a graduated system of support designed to meet the needs of Jefferson students who are not performing well academically.  Student grades are reviewed regularly; regular tutoring support is available both during the day and after school.  Social work and mentoring time is also offered.  Students still struggling despite these initial interventions will be offered academic lunch, team study and homework academy assignments.

Jefferson’s faculty and staff believe that this system of support is enhanced by a safe school environment for all students.  Encouraging the positive development of student behavior in and out of the classroom is an essential component of academic success.  Jefferson addresses school climate issues by providing staff development opportunities that focus on appropriate management of difficult students, close monitoring of students throughout the day and positive reinforcement of appropriate behavior.
