Enrichment Grades 6-8
"The middle school enrichment classes have been created to allow teachers and students the opportunity to enrich the regular curriculum with activities that will employ higher level thinking skills and challenging activities.  Skill building will emphasize the higher level thinking skills of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation from Bloom’s Taxonomy. The enrichment class curriculum will be an extension and enhancement of the regular curriculum at each grade level.  Units emphasize the content areas of science and social studies, but students will also utilize skills from other areas of the curriculum including:  reading, math, language arts, and fine arts.  Enrichment classes at the middle school level are taught during the FLEX time period.

Unit

Description

Adapt 6th Grade
Students understand how environmental factors shape the cultures of past societies and use problem solving and analytical skills to defend their choice of habitat.

Bones and Stones 6th Grade
Students participate in a simulation of what life was like for early humans in the Stone Age.
Disease Survivor Game 6th Grade
Students become aware of communicable diseases that affect them and people worldwide by examining symptoms, methods of transmission, treatments, and historical perspectives of each disease. 
Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles 6th Grade
Students learn about the scientific phenomena associated with bubbles by  experimenting with various objects to determine which objects can be used to make bubbles.
China  6th Grade
Students learn about and participate in the “ways” of ancient Chinese history and culture.
Contemporary Affairs  6th - 8th Grade
Students develop an enhanced understanding of contemporary affairs by incorporating critical thinking skills and analysis.

Murder in Athens  6th Grade 
Murder in Athens is a teacher created unit in which students re-create an actual murder trial from ancient Greece, and then use modern day forensics to examine the “evidence” surrounding the crime. 

Greek Mythology  6th Grade 
This is a teacher created unit written with the intention of providing students with a solid background and understanding of Greek Mythology. Students will learn the story of the creation of the earth and mankind, according to Greek Mythology, and illustrate scenes from the story.  They will examine and interpret the Greek Mythological Family Tree.  Students will read and act-out published plays of numerous Greek Myths, and evaluate and record the myth’s meaning. 

Solutions 6th Grade 
The objective of the unit is to allow students to explore some of the characteristics and properties of common mixtures and solutions.  In the process they will become acquainted with a scientific understanding of some of the everyday language associated with solutions.
Caravans 7th Grade
Through role-playing simulations students improve their knowledge of world geography while they travel around the world on a treasure quest as a member of a caravan. 
If Shipwrecks Could Talk  7th Grade
Students learn the methods and tools ancient mariners used to navigate and some of the most common causes of shipwreck. They discover how archaeologists work in the marine environment to discover, map, and interpret historic shipwrecks.
Debate And Genetics  7th Grade
Students learn the elements of a well-constructed argument, and then apply that skill to a critical evaluation of the ethical application of genetic research.
Renaissance Man 7th Grade
Students
explore some of the exceptional art, artists, and scientists of the Age of the Renaissance.
Our Neighbors: Canada & Mexico 7th Grade 
Many people in the United States are not familiar with the geography or culture of our neighbors to the north and south, Canada and Mexico. Students will focus on Canada by:  completing a Canadian map exercise, doing an activity to discover what they really know about Canada, completing a video guide while viewing a video on Canadian geography and culture, researching a Canadian province, creating a travel brochure on the province, and sharing their brochure with the class. Next, the students will focus on Mexico by:  completing a Mexican map exercise, doing an activity to discover misconceptions about Mexico, viewing and discussing videos on Mexican geography and culture, and playing the Mexican Cities Flag Race, which involves “visiting” Mexican cities to discover the variety of geography, climate, and culture in the country of Mexico. 

Money 7th Grade 
Money is a teacher created unit designed to allow students to explore the history, production, and design of the coins and currency they use everyday. 

Music 7th Grade   
This teacher created unit is designed to help students become familiar with music in the world’s cultures, and the instruments that make music unique.  Students will make musical instruments imitating those studied, and play simple songs together as a “band”.
House Design 8th Grade
Working as members of an architectural firm, students apply their math skills, cooperation skills, and creativity to design a new house within a budget.
Dinosaurs 8th Grade
Students make observations and do simulations based on the fossil evidence paleontologists have gathered about dinosaurs, use the information to examine theories about dinosaurs, and formulate with their own inferences and ideas.
Debate at Seneca Falls 8th Grade
Students investigate the reasons women held the first women’s rights convention, recognize how long it took to actually achieve many of these rights, and give their viewpoint as to whether these rights have been fully realized.
Federal Lands Road Trip Race 8th Grade
As part of a tour group, students become familiar with the variety of federal lands in the United States by following an itinerary visiting and completing a challenge on fifteen federally regulated sites. Students contemplate dispersal versus preservation of federal lands, striving to answer the question, “How can the common legacy be best managed for the greatest good to the greatest number over the longest time?"
Aerodynamics 8th Grade   
Aerodynamics is a unit created by teachers to expose students to the history of flight, the dynamics of flight, and to allow students to experiment in building paper airplanes and participate in an Air Fair.

Mountain Man & Trapping Issues 8th Grade 
Mountain Men Rendezvous is a unit from Interaction Publishers in which students gain a basic understanding of the role of the mountain man and re-enact the running of the gauntlet and the telling of yarns. Information on the unusual exploits during the lives of individual mountain men and an investigation on the ethics of trapping in our society has been added to the unit.

Spanish American War 8th Grade 
Rough Rider Interviews is a unit from Interaction Publishers in which students gain a basic understanding of the causes and effects of the Spanish American War, participate in interviews to become a Rough Rider, and discover what it means to be a “yellow journalist”.

Cattle Drive 8th Grade
Cattle Drive is a unit from Interaction Publishers in which students gain insight into the life of the mythic cowboy and re-enact a cattle drive.  Information on Mexican Vaqueros, African American cowboys, cattle brands, original historical cowboy photographs, and primary documents describing cattle drives through Champaign County has been added to enhance the unit.

Native Americans and the U.S. Government 8th Grade 
What are some of the major conflicts of the past that occurred between the United States Government and Native Americans?  How have these conflicts affected the lives of Native Americans?  What is the relationship of Native American tribes and the United States Government today?  Students will investigate the answers to these questions through research of primary and secondary documents. They will create presentations to share the information they have discovered with the class. In addition, students will give their viewpoint on the moral dilemmas presented by issues surrounding Native Americans today.
