Classroom News...

This fall we will be working with fourth grade buddies at least once a month.  During this time, we read to with one another.  We will try writing together, too.  It is a great way to get to know the other half of the building.  Our buddy class is a fourth grade class.  See the buddies sharing a moment before our Winter Holiday Break!

In the Classroom

Come on in Room 17 and join us for a morning of literacy.  What is literacy?  How about combining Words Their Way, Guided Reading and Shared reading along with some skill practice.  The teacher shares a story during shared reading at the rug.  Discussion ensues on choice of words, type of art, main character or making connections from the text to our real lives.  Poetry work daily shares the word building skills needed for the lesson on the week in Words Their Way.  This, too, is done at the rug in large group setting.  Next we break for guided reading groups and center or skill stations.  Children are called to work with the teacher in reading groups of same ability level.  These groups change as readers progress on to the next levels.  As a child waits to be called by the literacy specialist or the classroom teacher for a guided reading lesson, they are engaged in word building, listening to good literature on CD or cassette tape, computer time, writing center or pleasure reading.  Pearson Learning Good Habits, Great Readers

Math Instruction  Wow!  Math was never this much fun when I was a kid.  We use many different math manipulatives to understand concepts. If you wandered in while our math was in session, you might see small groups engaged in a exploration of materials, using materials or problem solving with the materials.  Partners may be questioning others for information that will be used in a tally mark page which is later information added to a graph.  Pattern Blocks, Geo Boards/Rubber Bands, rulers, tape measures, dice/rubber mats, counters are part of the math shelf and used weekly.  Our lessons focus on a main point but spiral so that a worksheet may contain an item from a lesson a week ago as well as a lesson yesterday.  The children are constantly reviewing and going over material to make sure that they understand it.  Each night there will be an assignment to go with the lesson of the day.  It may be finding all the items in your house that use a thermometer or working on a fact family using the numbers 3, 5, and 8.  Games along the way reinforce the concepts that are needed for a successful math program.  Once a year, you can attend Math Night and play the games that your child is using.

Handwriting is an important skill.  We use the Zaner-Bloser method of handwriting.  We will practice and practice until everyone has legible handwriting.  This is a very important part of First Grade. This includes numbers as well as letter/words.

Homework
We will have some homework in math and other subjects .  But I want the students to have time to relax, enjoy outdoors, and exercise as much as possible.  Homework will be at a minimum.  You should find that twenty minutes will cover any homework that we send  We will participate in Geography Genius and Math Superstars each week that it is offered. I consider this homework up and beyond the regular classroom work.  Your child should be reading aloud each night, too.  As they become competent, the reading will become silent reading.  It is harder to know if they are comprehending.

Please have an area set up at home for your child to practice handwriting as well as for homework.  It should be a well lit area.  I use the kitchen table at my house for one grandson to do his homework.  We have a desk set up in another room for the other grandson.  We have found that separation makes the best working environment for our boys.   One adult per child is the best tutor system you can give.

We use America Reads/Math Tutors to give students an extra boost and practice the skills that they have learned.  Our tutors are students at the University of Illinois.  They are from all departments and backgrounds.  Above you see a student working with a tutor.

Parent Involvement
There will be multiple opportunities to volunteer in our classroom.  The computer lab is a place we go where I will need parental help. You don't need to be computer literate to help in the lab. I can use extra help in the classroom, too.  Let me know how you can help and I will put you to work.  email me or call 351-3811

Grading Procedures
At the lower elementary level, a very basic grading system is used.  S is for satisfactory work, I is for improving, NI is for needs improvement.  We will have two mandatory conferences per year.  Feel free to contact me by phone or email to set up an appointment to discuss your child.

My Educational Background and Profile

I am a Kinesthetic-Visual learner.  I work best with my hands and teach that way, too.  We will start with an inventory of learning styles to find the best environment for your child.  I will adapt lessons and instruction to best fit your child's style.  We will have a year filled with many activities to suit each child's needs.

I grew up in Charleston, IL and attended Eastern Illinois University.  I received my Montessori certification at St.-Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute, IN.  I went to Olivet Nazarene University for my Master's degree.  Later I finished my administrative certification through Eastern Illinois University.  I am a lifetime learner and student.  Whatever my new interests are, I will take a class to find out more!  To find out more about my universities.
