My Educational
Background
I grew up with my parents and two
sisters in the East Moline part of the Quad Cities.
I was a Girl Scout and had to take piano and dance
lessons. My mother, grandmother and great
aunts were all creative and artistic. They created
wonderful art works. When I was young, I would be
able to be creative and do artistic projects with
them. This helped develop my love of Art. All
through High School, I was positive that after I
graduated, I was going to pursue my love of Math and
become a CPA but a caring Art teacher changed my
course of study and fostered my love of teaching -
Art! I graduated from Western Illinois University
with a degree in Art Education. I have
recently completed a Master degree in Educational
Organization and Administration from the University
of Illinois with a desire to some day to become a
school Administrator. I am married to Ron. We
have four grown children and five BEAUTIFUL grandchildren. |
The Year at a Glance
Each Sixth Grader will have a seven week rotation in
Art as well as the other Encore classes.
Each Seventh Grader will have a
seven week in Art as well
as the other Encore
classes.
Eighth graders have a choice in their Encore
selection. Art is offered in two semester rotations.
Each semester offers a different curriculum.
Students will choose two different semester Encore
offerings or a year of Foreign language with no
Encore choices.
Each Art class rotation will be 43 minutes long.
The classes will study content knowledge and
concepts that are aligned to both the district and
state standards and goals. The primary focus of the
classes is studying the processes and the techniques
of creating both two and three dimensional art
works. The students will be working in different
mediums, including but not limited to: painting,
drawing, clay, wire, printing, mixed media, fiber
art, explorations in architecture, technology, art careers, and
art history. Many art projects will have a cultural
and historical focus.

State Standards It
is the belief of District Unit 4 schools that all students
deserve access to the Arts through creation,
performance, and study. Through the study of the
Arts, students demonstrate and deepen their
understanding of basic knowledge and skills. The
Standards reinforce these applied learning skills
across the curriculum:
àSolving
Problems: thinking critically.
à Communication:
express and interpret ideas.
à Using
Technology: access information, express ideas,
communicate results.
à Working
in Teams: learn and communicate productively as an
individual and part of a group.
à Making
Connections: between the four arts and between the
Arts and other disciplines. |
Grading Procedures
I use a rubric that clearly defines
each project. Projects are evaluated based on this
rubric. The completed project is 50% of the grade.
The class work time used in the creating and making
the project is 50% of the grade. Homework is not usually assigned for Art except for research purposes or to
complete unfinished projects due to
absences.
The
grading scale is:
A 90 - 100
B 80 - 89
C 70 - 79
D 60 - 69
F 59 and Below

Activities:
Look at the above websites
and find one that interests you and your child.
Together, select and try an Art
project. I would like you to try some easy
projects in the beginning and then progress to
harder projects. I suggest that if you think you
made a mistake or messed up that you keep working on
the project. DON'T GIVE UP OR START OVER. I have
found that many "mistakes" have turned out to be
successes. Besides, you are the only one that
knows you made a "mistake".
Draw everyday. The more you draw the better
you will become. Start simple and progress to more
detailed or difficult things.
