6th Grade Honors ELA I

Dear Parents and Students,

The students who have been identified as gifted in the area of reading will be placed in the honors section of the ELA 1 (Literature.)  We will use the Prentice Hall Literature series as well as selected poems, letters, editorials, and independent reading books. Pre-AP strategies will be introduced and reinforces throughout the year.

“Pre-AP is the belief that we can prepare every student for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills and acquisition of knowledge as early as possible….students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in the a higher level of learning.”  (The AP Vertical Teams Guide for English Development Committee, The College Board)

I will offer challenging research projects for each unit of study.  The students will participate in literature circles, vocabulary studies, and investigate a variety of genres.  In addition, each student will be required to independently read challenging fiction and nonfiction selections.  This will require that the students read outside of the classroom. The student’s grade will be determined by an average of homework, test, project grades, and class participation.  Make-up work must be completed as soon as possible.  Students need to talk to me about setting up a reasonable schedule for completing makeup work.  I realize that it might be difficult to return to a full academic schedule after an illness.

I look forward to meeting with all of you at the fall Open House.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

                                                Cara Gutzmer, M. Ed

Grading Procedures

Daily Grades
make up 50% of your grade. They are comprised of:

Classwork is a daily expectation.  We will use folders kept in the classroom.  They will be graded weekly.

Homework is mainly to read your independent reading book outside of class for 30 minutes a day and some other assignments.

Major Grades are tests, projects, and book reviews.  They are worth 40% of your grade.  It is difficult to pass my class without turning in major grades!

Late work can be turned in for half credit within one week of the due date.  After one week, it may not be made up. You will use 10 % of your grade for each day your paper is late.

The grading scale follows Unit #4 guidelines, a strict 90-80-70-60 scale, with anything under 60 being a failing grade.

Parent Involvement
Parental/Guardian involvement is extremely important for the success of the student in class.  It is important that both the teacher and the parent/guardian communicate effectively with each other in order to ensure consistency.  I strongly encourage parent/guardian participation in school so that their child can have the best chance for a successful year.   I hope to consistently communicate with you about both the positives and the concerns regarding your child.  Please feel free to contact me whenever you have questions or concerns.
Ways for you to be more involved:
  • Communicate with your child's teachers via phone or email. Check your child's assignment notebook on a daily basis.  He/she will be writing in it daily!  Check our team website for grades and upcoming events. Make arrangements to come visit your child's classes. Make an appointment to meet with us.  Volunteer in class or come with us on field trips. Attend Open House this fall.
  • Set up a time to meet with teachers during parent-teacher conferences.

We want you to be a part of our team!!!
