Unit 4 to Host Dedication of Renovated Kenwood Elementary School

Mon, 09/21/2015 - 10:06am

Champaign Unit 4 School District will host a dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Kenwood Elementary School on October 15 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the school. The community is invited to attend this event and celebrate alongside the Board of Education and District leaders, as well as Kenwood staff, families, students, and alumni.

The $4.4 million expansion and renovation project was completed this summer. Features of the renovated and expanded Kenwood include a new gymnasium, dedicated cafeteria space, two new kindergarten classrooms, a new secured front entrance, updated technology infrastructure, and expanded parking. The existing building also received extensive updates including new flooring, casework and furniture throughout.

Over the past two school years, Kenwood has reinvented itself as a computer science/computational thinking (CS/CT) focused school that integrates coding across its core curriculum beginning in kindergarten. A strong and viable partnership with the University of Illinois works to assist in technology professional development for the Kenwood faculty, as well as providing unique opportunities to Kenwood students and their families through onsite collaborative technology workshops. This journey is documented in the U4 Innovate video linked at the following site:

The Kenwood renovation and expansion is part of a series of facilities projects that have been paid for with the District’s portion of the County-wide 1% sales tax passed by voters in 2009. Other projects include the extensive renovation and expansion of Garden Hills Elementary School; the newly constructed Booker T. Washington STEM Academy and Carrie Busey Elementary School in Savoy; and the renovation and expansion of Westview, Bottenfield, and Robeson Elementary Schools.

To ensure the 1% sales tax funds have been used as promised, the Promises Made, Promises Kept Committee, comprised of community members, has overseen the use of the funds. Information about this committee and more details are available at the following link:
