Edison Middle School and Champaign Unit 4 Receive Pro Patria Award; only three employers in Illinois honored.

Lt. Colonel Yvette Rose, Assistant Principal of Edison Middle School, nominated Edison because of the school’s support of her military obligations, including deployment, annual training and more. In her second year of teaching, Rose was mobilized with less than 30 days to prepare for the year-long tour.  “I was able to focus on my mission for 18 months and was reinstated to a teaching job of my choice in August 2005,” said Rose on her nomination submission.

When Rose was deployed in 2009, the school held a dedication assembly, which was recorded and sent to her on a DVD. When deployed again in 2012, Edison held a musical in her honor. Furthermore, perhaps the most touching is the way the Edison staff and administrators partnered with Rose’s spouse to help with her very young children. “Staff made sure all parent-teacher conferences were scheduled and attended, homework was completed and turned in on time, drop-offs and pick-ups were accurate,” said Rose. “The Principal dropped by the house on occasion to do a pulse check on my children and grandchildren. She sent me updates and assisted my stubborn husband behind the scenes so that the kids didn’t miss anything important. Knowing that this help was available allowed me to relax and focus on my mission in Iraq.”

“We are proud to have Lt. Colonel Yvette Rose on our team and tremendously grateful for her service to our country,” said Judy Wiegand, Superintendent of Champaign Unit 4 School District. “Angela Schoonover, Principal of Edison and her staff deserve this recognition. They truly support one another like family.”

Champaign Unit 4 School District is also Illinois’s public sector nominee for the National Secretary of Defense Freedom Award this year. Out of 2418 nominations submitted this year, only 154 were submitted for the national award.

Lt. Colonel Yvette Rose is currently on tour overseas.
