Garden Hills Dismissal Altered To Ensure Student Safety

Thu, 05/11/2006 - 12:00am

A man barricaded himself in a vehicle parked in a driveway approximately five blocks from Garden Hills Elementary School.  Garden Hills Principal Cheryl O’Leary was notified of the situation by the police department.  To ensure student safety at dismissal, the District made alternate transportation arrangements that included having vans available to transport children who normally walk home.  Some children living very near the school were escorted home by school personnel.  Garden Hills students who live in the barricaded area remained at school until parents were contacted and transportation arranged.

District administrators monitored the perimeter of the barricade to prevent children from walking into the area.  Children who live in the barricaded area and attend other schools were delivered to Garden Hills or to the Joanne Dorsey Home until parents could be contacted and transportation arranged.  Students at the Early Childhood Center who live in the area of the barricade remained at their school until parents could be contacted.

The administration was notified when the situation was under control, and all students were safely transported home by 4:35 p.m.
