Wed, 09/06/2006 - 1:00am

The Champaign Unit #4 School District received a $154,157.00 Novice Teacher Mentor Grant in August, 2006 from the Illinois State Board of Education.  The grant was awarded to support the collaborative partnership between Champaign Unit 4, and the Champaign Federation of Teachers with support from the Regional Office of Education and the Illinois Novice Teacher Support Program, (INTSP).  The grant proposes to design, implement and evaluate an innovative, intensive Novice Teacher Support Program for 52 first-year teachers.  Thirty-nine second-year teachers will also receive support.  The District’s state-approved program will be intensified by:

  • Addition a five-day New Teacher Academy
  • Improving the recruitment and selection process for mentors
  • Providing Cognitive Coaching Training for All Mentors
  • Adding Mentor Coordinator Positions to ensure monthly trainings aligned with the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards
  • Involving the Principal as a Member of the Collaborative Induction Team
  • Targeting Novice Professional Development to Formative Assessments
  • Enhancing the Minority Teacher Retention Sub-Committee
  • Focusing Training on Success in an Urban Environment
  • Development and Implementation of a Continuous Program Evaluation Model

These enhancements are expected to result in increased teacher retention, fewer teachers teaching out of their fields, retention of teachers , and most importantly, greater effectiveness in the classroom.  An evaluation of the program will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Illinois, and the District and CFT hope to present these results at the Novice Teacher Induction Conference in 2007.
