BY SUPERINTENDENT DR. JUDY WIEGAND

This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation (CUSF) 25th Anniversary Benefit Gala. CUSF is an independent, non-profit, community-supported foundation whose purpose is to enhance the quality of education in both the Champaign Unit #4 School District and Urbana School District #116.

Saturday evening's event celebrated CUSF’s accomplishments and shared plans for the future. Dr. Robert Easter, President of the University of Illinois, and Dr. Tom Ramage, President of Parkland College, were the featured speakers.

The Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in March 1988 with the goal of generating new sources of revenue from local businesses and community members for K-12 education.

The work of the CUSF is more important today than ever. We cannot rely on federal and state agencies to provide the needed resources for our schools, and as a community we need to face this reality. Over its 25-year history, CUSF has supported both school districts with over $1.3 million in support through: 1. Grants to teachers for their classrooms ($919,000), 2. Pass-throughs to benefit special projects ($393,000), 3. Scholarships ($55,000), and 4. Teacher Recognition ($8,000).

As Superintendent, I want to thank CUSF for the support it has provided over the past 25 years, and I look forward to the continued role it will play over the next 25 years in supporting all students in our community to be college and career ready.

We are very fortunate to have the support of CUSF and to have community members who are willing to generously support their efforts. If you have an opportunity to support the foundation, I strongly encourage you do so, whether it’s participating in one of their many fundraisers or getting inspired at the I.D.E.A Store, Central Illinois' premier eco-edu-art creative reuse marketplace, located at 28 E. Springfield, Champaign.

Strong schools truly do build stronger communities and CUSF is working to make this possible.
