Champaign Unit 4 Community Outreach Coordinator Lauren Smith Receives National Service Learning and Civic Engagement Collaboration Award

Congratulations to Champaign Unit 4 Community Outreach Coordinator Lauren Smith, Parkland Professor Brian Nudelman, and AmeriCorps Vista Marsha Reardon, who recently received the National Service Learning and Civic Engagement Collaboration Award from the Community College National Center for Community Engagement. They received the recognition for the Garden Hills Homework Club they established and manage.

Magnet Programming/Changes to Student Assignment Process To Be Discussed

Champaign Unit 4 administrators will facilitate a public meeting at Booker T. Washington Elementary School on Tuesday, January 27 at 6:00 p.m. to discuss changes to the student assignment process for SY2009-10 and possible future magnet programming at BTW and Garden Hills. The 6 p.m. start time is a change to the previously announced meeting time of 7:00 p.m.

Garden Hills Dismissal Altered To Ensure Student Safety

A man barricaded himself in a vehicle parked in a driveway approximately five blocks from Garden Hills Elementary School.  Garden Hills Principal Cheryl O’Leary was notified of the situation by the police department.  To ensure student safety at dismissal, the District made alternate transportation arrangements that included having vans available to transport children who normally walk home.  Some children living very near the school were escorted home by school personnel.  Garden Hills students who live in the
