National Social Studies Teacher of the Year

Christine Adrian, Social Studies teacher at Jefferson Middle School, has been selected as the 2011 Outstanding Middle Level Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award recipient. The award will be presented during the 91st Annual Conference of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), “Dimensions of Diversity” in Washington, D.C., at a special Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony on Friday morning, December 2, 2011.
Ms. Adrian is in her 10th year of teaching at Jefferson. Jefferson’s Principal Dr. Susan Zola said, "Mrs. Adrian is a master teacher. Her ability to connect authentic and meaningful real world democracy and citizenship with the content of her curriculum is second to none. Her use of primary documents makes the students learning meaningful and relevant. Jefferson is extremely proud to be home to the National Social Studies Teacher of the Year."
As the recipient of this award, Ms. Adrian will be presented with a commemorative gift, a complimentary one year regular NCSS membership from NCSS, a check for $2,500 and traveling/lodging reimbursement from the award sponsor Farmers Insurance. In addition, Ms. Adrian has been invited to present a session at the NCSS Annual conference.
Sue Blanchette, president of NCSS, congratulated Ms. Adrian, saying “The selection process was completed by past and present social studies educators who are impressed by your accomplishments in and outside of the classroom, and I am very pleased with their decision.”
