Four Phases of ECP
PHASE I (freshman year)
The freshman class students will be introduced to the Education to Careers and Professions Program (ECP) during the school year. The first step in the career decision-making process is understanding ones interests, skills and abilities, values, goals, and most importantly their personality. A Career Interest Area Survey will be given to each student which will help each student pick one of six career interest areas. Once a career interest area(s) is selected, each student receives the “ECP Career Interest Area Handbook” and works with his or her counselor to develop appropriate coursework. Each freshman will continue to utilize the internet based Career Cruising System which they have been using since 6th grade to explore the world of work.
PHASE II (sophomore year)
The sophomore class students have the opportunity to participate in informational career interviews. After a student has completed the first step in the career decision-making process, he or she is eligible to apply for an informational career interview. When a student visits a worksite, he or she can learn a great deal from an individual employee about what their job entails. In addition, during the fall, each sophomore is given the “Holland Personality Assessment” and the results of that assessment are given to the school counselors to be used in developing appropriate coursework for each student.
PHASE III (junior year)
The junior class students have the opportunity to take part in career mentoring. Only students that have completed the first step in the career decision-making process and have completed an informational career interview are eligible for career mentoring. Students that have an aptitude for and a strong interest in a specific career are paired with “adult peers” who represent the career interest of the students. The objective of career mentoring is to give the students that participated in informational career interviews a more thorough exposure to a specific career area that he or she discovered they had a strong interest. During the fall, each junior will be given the “Work Values Assessment” as they continue in the career decision-making process and be introduced to “Countdown to Graduation” a planning tool for each student to use as he or she prepares for his or her post-secondary education.
PHASE IV (senior year)
The senior class students have the opportunity to participate in a non-paid, project-based internship semester honors class. Workplace social competencies, research methodology, and communication skills are a part of the connecting activities learned at school and made relevant in the workplace. Expectations are high and assignments are challenging as the students get a real world opportunity to experience a career before they graduate from high school. Upon successful completion of this one semester honors course the student will receive credit toward his or her high school graduation. The ECP District Coordinator and a certified teacher collaborate to make this class a tremendous learning experience.
