Frequently Asked Questions about TPI / ESL
- Will my child be taught the same subjects and learn the same skills as students in the regular program? Yes. All students in the TPI / ESL program receive instruction in accordance to the Illinois Learning Standards. Language Arts (reading and writing), mathematics, science, and social studies are taught as part of the state mandated curriculum. Music, PE, and Art are also part of a balanced curriculum.
- Will my child learn English? Yes. The language of instruction is English. When possible, native language support is offered by ESL staff. ESL instruction is an integral part of the student's education; students receive ESL support according to their level of English proficiency and grade level. Students acquire listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English through instruction in core curriculum. The collaboration between mainstream and ESL teachers foster student success.
- How will the ESL program help my child? The program supports English Learners' linguistic and academic needs because it is grounded on best practice and research-based instructional strategies. It provides English language instruction, with home language support, when possible. It promotes multicultural awareness and a diverse learning environment because ESL students spend most of the school day in mainstream classrooms. The program facilitates ESL support through two instructional models: Pull-out and Push-in. The content subjects (math, science, and social studies) and elective are taught by mainstream teachers who adapt content to meet ELLs needs (i.e., Sheltered English).
- How can I become involved in the ESL Program? You can join the Title III Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) and participate in program planning, including allocation of grant and district funds. You can become a volunteer and help in the classroom and after school activities. You can encourage your child to achieve by showing interest in learning and school work. You can provide a place to study at home. You can model literacy by reading and writing with your child in your first language and/or English.
