Standards-Based Grading

Champaign Unit 4 middle schools are implementing Standards-Based Grading, or SBG, to communicate the most accurate student achievement data to students and families. Used by middle and high schools across the country, this system provides a more complete picture of students’ understanding of concepts than traditional letter grades.

Why move to SBG?

Standards-based grades are not based on completion of assignments, but rather understanding of a skill or concept. The system will give teachers, students and families a tool to identify specific areas for improvement. Families will be able to use standards-based grade reports to be proactive and see which standards students should focus on to improve proficiency by end of quarter.

Content Standards

Grade reports will include a specific list of 3+ content standards per subject, graded by the student’s level of proficiency - Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching, Beginning. These proficiency levels show exactly where a student should focus throughout the rest of the quarter to develop mastery of a standard.

Work Habits

In addition to content standards, teachers will give feedback on three work habits. These are valuable behaviors that help students be successful and grow academically:

  1. Completion - to meet this standard, students are expected to complete their work and attempt all parts of their assignments to the best of their ability
  2. Timeliness - to meet this standard, students are expected to turn their work in on time (before or on the due date).
  3. Engagement - to meet this standard, students are expected to be engage in coversation, listen to their teachers and classmates when they are speaking, and working to accomplish the learning goal.

We are looking forward to the opportunity to help each student progress toward mastering concepts based on his or her learning needs. For more details on how this system works, see the Standards-Based Grading FAQ.

What is JumpRope?

Families can access grades and learning standards through JumpRope, our new online grade reporting system. Log in with your student’s email address as the username and ID number as the password. If you have trouble accessing the portal, please request a written report from the teacher.
