Truancy Alternative Optional Education Program (TAOEP)
The purpose of the program is to assist schools and families by identifying truant students, assessing the causes of truancy and providing intervention services.
Champaign Unit#4 School District offers a comprehensive Truancy Intervention Initiative complemented with Check & Connect, a targeted researched-based, three-tiered Truancy Intervention Program.
- Early Intervention: Basic early intervention strategies to address the needs of truants who have missed fewer than 10 unexcused absences and intensive intervention strategies to address the needs of truants who have missed more than 10 unexcused absences. Incentives, mentoring and supportive services are offered.
- Prevention: Monitoring of truant students in the areas of daily attendance, punctuality, grades, and behavior to promote school engagement and improved attendance.
- Academic Support: Academic counseling, credit retrieval, tutoring and academic placement.

Truancy prevention services are provided to students that are truants, chronic truants, Potential drop outs and drop outs grades K-12. Truants are defined as students subject to compulsory school attendance that are absent for the school day or a portion of the school day without proper permission. Students are considered chronically truant if absent for 10% or more of the previous 180 regular attendance days without permission. Dropouts consist of those students no longer attending school, while potential dropouts are those students with an attendance problem (chronic truancy, truancy, tardiness, selective absenteeism or excessive absenteeism) that interferes with academic learning.
The Operation Stop Truancy Prevention program is funded through Illinois State Board of Education Truancy Alternative Optional Education Program (TAOEP) to serve 550 students. Daily attendance is important and Unit#4 takes a proactive approach to encouraging students to attend school: All Day, Every Day.
