EGYPT ARTIFACT ASSIGNMENT

NAME PERIOD TEACHER

During our study of Ancient Egypt, students will be required to create an artifact of ancient Egypt. This artifact will be based on research the student performs in creatin'g his artifact. These artifacts will be part of a "museum" or classroom display. Artifact and "museum placard" will be evaluated on neatness, creativity, and demonstration of research.

Phase One: Selection of ancient Egyptian "roles" in society. Students need to rank the following categories/"roles" of Egyptian society to research and create an artifact:

Pharaohs (rulers and their families-games, crowns, jewelry, etc.)

Military Life (weapons, battles, chariots, etc.)

Engineers and artisans (pyramids, obelisks, tombs, etc.)

Farmers, food vendors, and other merchants (recipes, farming scenes, etc) Priests, astrologers, and scribes (mummies, etc.)

Rank the above with numbers 1 thru 5. To make an even representation of "roles" in ancient Egyptian society, teacher may not give student his first choice. Teacher will provide students with a packet of project options (students may propose other project ideas).

Phase Two: Students are to perform research on "role" and select an artifact to creat_ for the museum/classroom display.

FOR A GRADE OF A "C" OR LOWER: Student must write research on a large note card (5x8). The artifact should be a three dimensional representation of an object that represents the "role" of ancient Egyptian society. Examples: A pharaoh could be represented by a royal crown of Upper or Lower Egypt or the combined crown of Egypt. An Engineer might be represented by model of the pyramids of Giza. Farmers might have a diorama of farming life. A merchant represented by a diorama of a marketplace. A food vendor could be represented by an Egyptian recipe prepared. Military life could be represented by a shield, a chariot, a fortress, or cardboard weapons. Research must be based upon one printed source. Source of research must be stated on card as well as the phrase "This artifact was donated by noted archeologist (student's name)."

FOR A GRADE OF A "B" OR HIGHER: Student must do the above requirements PLUS utilize more than three resources of research (include a bibliography) and write at least a five paragraph report (as opposed to a 5x8 card).
