Social Studies Independent Reading Projects

Directions:  To receive extra credit, complete one of the following projects for a book with a social studies theme.  Please clear the title with Ms. Gersdorf.  Points given for each project will not exceed the amount in each project box. 
Remember:  All class assignments must be turned in to receive extra credit. 
                      All projects submitted should show that you have read the entire book.

 

 

Art Log
Choose six quotes from your book.  Illustrate each quotation.

Book Jacket
Design a new cover for your book.  Include a summary on the back, but don’t be a spoiler!

Comic Strip
Draw a four-panel (or longer) comic strip based on your book.

Time Line
Draw an illustrated time line showing the events of your book.  Put the events of the book on one side and world events on the other.

Travel Brochure
Design a brochure (pamphlet) advertising the setting of your book as a vacation spot.

Book Talk

Show your book, stating the author’s name, something about the plot, and explain why you recommend it. You may also want to read a short excerpt.

Monologue
Write and deliver a speech from the point of view of a character in the book.

Song
Write a song with lyrics
based on the characters and/or events of the book.

Biography

Write a short biography or autobiography of one of the characters in your book.

Compare/Contrast
Write an essay comparing two books on the same subject or two books by the same author.

Diary
Write four-five (or more) diary entries kept by one of the characters in your book.

Glossary

Compile a glossary of slang, dialect, or vocabulary used in your book.

Letter to a Friend
Write a letter to a friend or family member recommending your book and explaining why.

Library Recommendation
Write a letter to the librarian recommending that the book be purchased.

Time Capsule

Create a time capsule of significant items representing events of the book.  Make a list and explain why you chose to include each item.
