Staff Development Priorities

The goals for the district provided great guidance on how the Staff Development Committee would proceed to create criteria for approving PDH courses. Upon looking at the goals, the following areas were identified:

  • Develop and implement a social curriculum district-wide
  • Ensure a uniform, proactive approach for behavior and discipline
  • Implement the Common Core curriculum
  • Prioritize strong foundational skills in literacy and math
  • Partner with the U of I and other institutions of higher education as resources for professional development for staff members
  • Implement curriculum and programs that embrace cultural diversity- this would include approaching decisions from a social justice lens
  • Support student achievement with technology for all buildings, all students

The Staff Development Committee created a functioning, systemic process for course proposal, approval, and coordination focusing on district goals. The committee created a professional development booklet for the district outlining the process and all of the professional development options for the 2013-2014 school year. In order to complete these tasks, the following priorities were completed:

  1. Update all forms and create a document explaining the process
  2. Update the website information and share information with everyone regarding future plans
  3. Create criteria that will be used to help the group determine whether or not courses should be approved for Board Credit or PDHs
  4. Create a within committee process for continuous approval of courses submitted which could include sub-committees
  5. Create a proposal for funding of a comprehensive professional development program and submit to the administration for consideration in next year's budget process
  6. Create a process for obtaining feedback from teachers and support staff regarding the types of professional development options they wish to have available to them
