Middle School Social Studies Standards

Middle school students will work toward mastering the following standards:

Standard 1: Claim

Performance Indicators:

  • Make a claim in order to answer compelling and supporting questions.
  • Recall and synthesize unit content knowledge to communicate ideas about the world.
  • Develop compelling and supporting questions about the world.

Standard 2: Evidence

Performance Indicators:

  • Identify and analyze the essential components of primary and secondary sources.
  • Find evidence in order to defend a claim.
  • Evaluate evidence to decide whether it supports a claim or counterclaim.

Standard 3: Reasoning

Performance Indicators:

  • Interpret primary and secondary sources within their historical, economical, geographical, and political context.
  • Justify and explain claims with evidence from primary and secondary sources.

Standard 4: Action

Performance Indicators:

  • Apply historical knowledge to identify and explain connections between past and present.
  • Develop, evaluate, and defend a course of action to address real world needs or challenges.
