Backpack and school supply drive for Unit 4 students at Douglass Park

Kindergarten Readiness

Social-emotional and academic activities that jump-start your child’s kindergarten journey and help you support their learning throughout the school year.

PFLL (Parent Family Learning Lab)

The Parent and Family Learning Lab is a collaboration between Project READ, Champaign Unit 4, and the Champaign Public Library Douglass Branch. Parenting education, children’s education, adult education/ESL support, library services, and parent and child together activities are provided.

The Parent and Family Learning Lab uplifts whole families by providing structured, culturally responsive literacy support for children and their adult household members, parenting support, and family activities through a 3-way partnership among Project READ (Parkland College Adult Education), The Center for Family and Community Engagement at Champaign Unit 4 Schools, and the Douglass Branch of the Champaign Public Library. The PFLL nourishes and develops family-based learning by providing customized online and in-person activities that promote a community of learning. Dedicated specialists from our partnership create and post our activities, make regular support phone calls to parents, and coordinate one-to-one tutoring for children and their adult household members.
Registered Families will enjoy:

1. Free one-to-one adult tutoring in ESL, basic math or reading (1-2 hrs/week Zoom/WhatsApp)

2. Parenting educational and support activities (Facebook)

3. PACT (Parent and Child Together activities) such as family yoga or scavenger hunts (Facebook or doorstep delivered)

4. Library Activities such as story time (Facebook)

Families that participate in all 4 elements of the Lab for at least 20 hours before the end of the school year can choose a prize such as a rice cooker, glass blender, toaster oven, or cast-iron skillet.

In Feb 2021 we start our Facebook-based programming and support community, which includes:

  • Mindful Mondays: Quick motivational reminders for parents
  • TikTok Tuesdays: simple videos that families can create and post
  • Work-out Wednesdays: short family-based movement songs or videos
  • Together Thursdays/Juntos los jueves /Réunion de jeudi: (7:00 pm) Live activities such as library story time
  • Fridays en famille -- Fridays en familia: movie and activity links for families to have fun together

Tutoring for children (upon request) and their adult family members is scheduled individually for Zoom or WhatsApp.

Special Person’s Day: National holiday that celebrates grandparents, extended family, mentors, and friends within your child’s support system. Students are given the opportunity to invite their parents, grandparents, special family friend, or a significant person to visit their classroom. Invited guests can share lunch with the student, volunteer to read to students, or assist the teacher in the classroom.

Unit 4/Park District Summer Camp

This is a 6-week summer camp held at Garden Hills. Students get extra help with math and reading taught by certified teachers and arts and enrichment by the Park District staff.

The Warm-A-Kid program has been very effective in meeting the needs of children in Champaign Unit 4 Schools for over 20 years, as meeting the basic needs of our students is a fundamental part of our educational system. We have served countless children and families from our community with the help of generous donors.

The number of low-income households and families in transition in our district continues to grow. We hope we are able to respond to all of the calls, and that is our request to you. We need your help to put a coat on at least one child. The Warm-A-Kid program is solely funded through donations received from our local community. Your gift, however great or small, will make a difference and will be remembered for years to come.
You may forward your donations (new coats and/or monetary donations made payable to Warm-A-Kid) to Unit 4's Center for Family and Community Engagement, located at 703 S. New St., Champaign. All donations are tax deductible. The following are the most common coat sizes needed:

  • Boys 5/6, 6/7, 10/12, 14/16; men's S and M
  • Girls 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 10/12, 14/16; women's S, M, and L

As with any great cause, seizing the opportunity to make a difference in a child's life requires willing partners who deeply believe in the cause and demonstrate their belief through their investment. Special thanks to those of you who have consistently supported us each year; you have been the cornerstone of our success. To those of you who have not joined us yet, please consider this request. We hope you will support us if you can. Thank you for any and all donations!

Young Achievers
Every year we honor outstanding fifth-grade students from across the district in the areas of Academic Achievement, Ambassador of Goodwill, Arts, and Sports. Teachers nominate students who they believe best represent what it means to be a Young Achiever in Unit 4.
