Why Champaign Unit 4?

Working in Unit 4 offers the opportunity to grow as an employee, as a person, and as an advocate for children. We are looking for staff members who don't just go to work every day, but who are on a mission to help every child reach his or her full potential. We are dedicated to providing the very best service to our students and families, and our service results in outstanding classroom instruction, efficient and helpful offices, a clean and inviting learning environment, safe transportation, nutritious meals, and dozens of outstanding support programs in areas such as nursing, libraries, counseling, social work, therapy, and after school care. We invite you to review our commitment to enabling every child to do his or her best and consider joining our outstanding staff.

Diversity of Faculty and Staff

We are committed to maintaining a diverse workforce that mirrors the community we serve. The District continues to refine recruitment efforts to diversify staff to ensure that it continues to hire qualified minority candidates, continues to refine retention plans to keep minority teachers in Champaign Unit 4 Schools, and continues to ask hiring administrators to reflect on the diversity of their hires and develop action steps for improvement as needed.

Several times each year, the district’s Minority Teacher Recruiting & Retention Committee (MTRRC) hosts formal networking events in which minority staff members have the opportunity to interact with district and building administrators, members of the Board of Education, and selected community partners. These events are well attended, and the MTRRC has received positive feedback from staff about the level of support they provide.

The District continues to emphasize recruiting a diverse, skilled substitute work force in order to create a pipeline for hiring permanent staff.

According to data from the Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Audit ending September 30, 2019, the diversity of the labor force in Champaign Unit 4 is high:

  • Staff members from minority groups constitute almost 30 percent of the labor force of the entire District.
  • The percentage of Black staff members is near the highest level ever reported.
  • Teachers from minority groups make up approximately 16 percent of the District’s teacher labor force. This is approximately equal to the nine-year average.
  • At the national level, the number of Black male teachers declined by almost 11 percent from 2018 and the number of Hispanic male teachers declined by approximately 10 percent. The district-wide percentage for both of these groups remained relatively unchanged. The overall percentage of Black teachers in the district has increased slightly since 2018.
  •  Representing almost 36 percent of total administrators in Champaign, the number of non-White licensed administrators remains near its all-time high.
  •  Nationally, approximately 13 percent of licensed administrators are Black; in Champaign Unit 4, 26 percent are Black.
