English Screener

Bilingual Science Instruction Prepares Students for STAAR Testing | Tech-Labs

The State of Illinois requires that, if a family identifies a language other than English on the Home Language Survey at registration, the student must be screened for English proficiency

We use WIDA screening instruments to determine if students coming into our district will need English supports to be successful in the classroom.

Here is what you can expect when you bring your student in for an English screening test:

  1. For Kindergarten and 1st grade, the test will take between 15 and 45 minutes. One parent or guardian may accompany the student.
  2. For grades 2-12, the test will take between 30 and 80 minutes.
  3. The test will assess four domains of English proficiency: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
  4. In accordance with Unit #4 Covid 19 protocols, we will be doing all screeners individually using masks, social distancing, and plexiglass barriers. All equipment will be sanitized between uses.
  5. After testing, results will be shared with parents/guardians and the student's teachers.
  6. The screener is only used to determine what level of support--if any--will be needed for the student to be successful in the classroom.
