Unit 4 Leaders to Participate in One Winter Night

Tue, 01/06/2015 - 9:07am

Four Champaign Schools leaders are teaming up to raise awareness of homelessness within our schools and community through the annual One Winter Night event hosted by C-U at Home.

This year, more than 65 Unit 4 families and 120 students are considered homeless. Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand, Board President Laurie Bonnett, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Laura Taylor, and District Homeless Liaison Lekevie Johnson have signed up to spend 12 chilly hours outside sleeping in a cardboard refrigerator box in Downtown Champaign alongside fellow volunteers looking to raise awareness and support homeless families and community members.

“In my role as Superintendent, I see firsthand how homelessness impacts families in our community,” said Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand. “We know that in order to concentrate in school or make positive changes in life, it is critical that our basic needs are being met. Many of us are fortunate enough to have support systems in place that ensure we have a warm bed to sleep in at night. However, many in our community are still in need of support and C-U at Home is working to address the issue of homelessness by connecting families and individuals with the resources and support they need.”

About One Winter Night
Believe it or not, on any given night, over 500 people in Champaign County do not spend the night in their own home. Some sleep with friends. Others sleep in shelters. Some sleep in cars. And others sleep outside. The goal of C-U at Home One Winter Night is to raise awareness about those who are homeless, helping others realize that someday that could be me. C-U at Home is dedicated to supporting the most vulnerable homeless, those who are more likely to die early unless their circumstances change.

One Winter Night will be held in the heart of downtown Champaign, near the corner of Neil Street and Main Street on the evening of Friday, February 6, 2015. The goal for each box dweller participant is to raise at least $1,000 with a total event fundraising goal of raising more than $100,000 to support homeless community members in Champaign-Urbana.
