Taking Action on Lead

Champaign Unit 4 School District is committed to student and staff safety. As part of this commitment, and in compliance with new state law, Champaign Unit 4 tested for lead in the water at our early childhood and elementary schools.

Summary of testing by school.

Barkstall - lead detected in 6 sinks
Booker T. Washington - not tested, constructed after January 1, 2000
Bottenfield - no action needed
Carrie Busey - not tested, constructed after January 1, 2000
Champaign Early Childhood Center - lead detected in 18 sinks
Columbia Center - lead detected 2 drinking fountains, 1 sink
Dr. Howard - lead detected in 4 sinks
Garden Hills - no action needed
International Prep Academy - lead detected in 1 drinking fountain, 3 sinks
Kenwood - no action needed
Robeson - lead detected in 2 drinking fountains, 2 sinks
South Side - lead detected in 2 drinking fountains
Stratton - lead detected in 8 sinks
Westview - no action needed

Taking action.

The impacted drinking fountains have been removed and/or replaced.

We are also posting signage and communicating that filling water bottles is best done at a drinking fountain rather than a sink. Although most sinks were within recommended IDPH range, this is an encouraged practice moving forward for all sinks.
