Board of Education Approves Multiple Administrative Positions

At the Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 10, 2019, the Board approved multiple administrative appointments:

  • Principal at South Side Elementary School
  • Principal at CECC (Champaign Early Childhood Center)
  • Assistant Principal at Edison Middle School
  • Assistant Principal at Kenwood Elementary School
  • Dean of Students at Edison Middle School
  • Assistant Director of Communications
  • Director of Facilities and Maintenance
  • Director of Facilities and Grounds

Cheryl Dearing appointed as Principal of Champaign Early Childhood Center effective July 1, 2019

Dearing currently serves as Special Needs Director/Preschool Coordinator for Pontiac CCSD #429, a position she has held since July 2008.

At CCSD #429, Dearing oversees special education programs for the district. Her duties include the implementation and management of a variety of related grants, including Preschool for All, IDEA grants, Medicaid, and local funds. She is also responsible for the direct supervision and evaluation of the district’s special education licensed staff.

Prior to her current role, Dearing began her education career in 1998 as a Special Education Teacher with the Livingston County Special Services Unit in Pontiac before joining CCSD #429 as a Special Education Teacher in 2002.

Dearing holds a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Illinois State University (1998) and a Master in School Administration from Concordia University (2007).

Christian Mahone appointed as Principal of South Side Elementary effective July 1, 2019

Mahone currently serves as a Principal of Xtreme Summer Academy in Springfield after recent roles as Administrative Intern/Assistant Principal at Washington Middle School with Springfield Public Schools and Acting Assistant Principal of Elementary Summer School.

He entered the education field at Nielson Elementary in Galesburg where he taught Kindergarten, First Grade, and Fifth Grade until June 2014.  Mahone then joined Jane Addams Elementary School in Springfield as a Fifth Grade Teacher, where he also served as principal/lead teacher in the absence of the principal.

Mahone holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Middle School Endorsement from Knox College in Galesburg (2011), and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Illinois-Springfield (2017).

Joel Burgener appointed as Assistant Principal at Edison Middle School effective July 30, 2019

Burgener currently serves as Secondary Coordinator of Teaching and Learning for Unit 4 Schools. He is a graduate of Centennial High.

At Unit 4, Burgener is responsible for designing and conducting professional learning opportunities for teachers, researching and evaluating resources and instructional tools to support teachers in the classroom, and facilitating the alignment of curriculum to state and national standards.

Prior to working at Unit 4, Burgener was Principal and Athletic Director at St. John Lutheran School from 2013-16. He led development and management of a long-term strategic plan for prekindergarten through eight grades, design and implementation of staff development, and maintaining budgets, supervising and evaluating staff, and coordinating and supervising athletic programs. He began his teaching career as a Science Teacher at Centennial in 2006.

Burgener earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Eastern Illinois University (2006) and Master of Science in Education from Montana State University (2011). In May 2019, he completed the Principal Preparation Program through the University of Illinois and is pursuing enrollment in the University’s Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership doctoral program.

Kelly Koller appointed as Assistant Principal of Kenwood Elementary effective July 1, 2019

Koller currently serves as a Special Education Teacher with Unit 4 Schools at Edison Middle School, a position she has held for the past 10 years.

In her role at Edison, Koller serves as the Special Education Building Leader and RTI Team Member. She also has held leadership roles as Novice Teacher Mentor, Professional Development Facilitator, Basketball Coach and Volleyball Coach.

Koller earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from Eastern Illinois University in Dec. 2008, and Master’s Degree in Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership from the University of Illinois in 2018. She also received her endorsement as a Special Education Director from the University of St. Francis in May 2019.

Sylvester (Sonny) Walker appointed as Dean of Students at Edison Middle School effective July 30, 2019

Walker served as a Dean at BTW STEM Academy from Feb. 2019 through the end of the 2018-19 school year.

A life-long resident of Champaign, a former Unit 4 student, and graduate of Centennial High, Walker began his teaching career at Centennial as a Physical Education Teacher in Oct. 2006. He also serves as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Centennial. For the past several years, Walker has served Centennial as Administrator for the Day when needed.

Walker earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Arts and Science from South Dakota State University in May 2006. He is scheduled to complete his Master’s in School Administration from the University of Illinois in May 2020.

Katherine Tellez hired as Assistant Director of Communications effective June 17, 2019

Tellez most recently served as a substitute teacher in Unit 4 after two years as a nightly news anchor for WCCU Fox Champaign.

At WCCU, Tellez anchored the 5:30 and 9 p.m. newscasts while also overseeing the newsroom and night reporters, producers, and part-time staff. She assisted with delegating responsibilities to reporters, participated in content decision, and managed the website and social media outlets.

Tellez spent one year as Director of Communications at Eureka College. She also has media experience at WEEK-TV (Peoria) as a Multimedia Journalist, KHQA-TV (Quincy) as a producer/reporter, and WGN (Chicago) as a news intern.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications/Journalism (2010) and a Master of Arts in Journalism (2011) from DePaul University in Chicago.

Richard McQueen Named Director of Facilities and Maintenance effective July 1, 2019

McQueen is currently an Assistant Director of Facilities for Unit 4, a position he has held since 2015.

He joined Unit 4 Schools’ Maintenance Department in 2000 as a Lead Storekeeper, performing all duties related to the District’s warehouse operations. McQueen moved to the position of Maintenance Staff in 2006 where he assisted with all levels of district-wide building maintenance needs.

McQueen holds several certifications in the operations and maintenance field, including Illinois ASBO Facilities Operation, Air Conditioning Service and Recovery, Lift Operation, Forklift Operation, and Mechanical Systems.

Stephen Waldron named Director of Facilities and Grounds effective July 1, 2019

Waldron has held a variety of supervision and management positions in the field of maintenance services.

While working for the Pflugerville (Texas) Independent School District, Waldron spent one year as Distribution Supervisor, four years as Coordinator of Custodial Services and Energy Management and five years as Coordinator of Energy Management. He was formerly Project Manager for Energy Systems Associates Inc. of Round Rock, Texas.

Waldron served eight years of active duty in the United States Marine Corps and Army, and left service as a non-commissioned officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from LeTourneau University in Texas (2013).
