Board of Education Approves Pair of Central Appointments

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Champaign Unit 4 School District announced a pair of Central High School appointments at its Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Derrick Cooper Named Associate Principal at Central High School
Cooper moves to Associate Principal from his current position as Assistant Principal/Summer School Principal at Central and will assume his new role July 1. He began his career with Unit 4 Schools in 2009 when he was hired as a Physical Education Teacher assigned to Booker T. Washington Elementary. After four years at BTW, Cooper was selected as Physical Education/Health Teacher at Jefferson Middle School, where he continued through Dec. 2014. In Jan. 2015, Cooper was named Interim Dean of Students at Centennial High School. During the 2015-16 school year, Cooper was Assistant Principal at Westview Elementary before moving to Central High School as an administrator in Aug. 2016.

Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Western Michigan University (2009) and a Master of Education in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2013).  He is currently enrolled in the University of Illinois School Executive Leadership doctoral program and anticipates completion of the program in the spring of 2022.

Sarah Long Named Assistant Principal/Summer School Principal at Central High School
Long was tabbed to fill the vacancy of Assistant Principal/Summer School Principal after serving as 10-month Assistant Principal at Central High School. Long began her teaching career with Unit 4 Schools in August 2012 as a Cross Categorical Teacher assigned to Central. After four years in that role, she was appointed Central’s Dean of Students in Aug. 2016, a position held until moving into the role as 10-month assistant principal two years later. She will begin her new role on July 1.

Long earned a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) in 2012. She holds a Master of Science in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2016).
