Unit 4 Board of Education Approves Three Appointments Monday

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Champaign Unit 4 School District announced approval of three appointments during its Board of Education meeting Monday night.

Cheryleta Cooney Named Assistant Principal at Centennial High School
Cooney steps into the role of Assistant Principal at Centennial High School after previously working as an educational consultant assisting schools with restorative practices and using data in order to diminish achievement gaps. She began her education career as an American History Teacher with the Honolulu Public Schools in Oahu, Hawaii. In July 2000, she relocated to the Hazel Crest (Ill.) School District as an elementary teacher. From 2007-16, Cooney worked as an elementary teacher and lead teacher for Chicago Public Schools. In addition to her work as an educator, Cooney is a U.S. Army Veteran and served tours in Bosnia and Hungary. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State University (2000) and a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Chicago State University (2006). Cooney begins her appointment on July 30.

Melinda Miethe Named Assistant Principal at Centennial High School
Miethe assumes the role of Assistant Principal at Centennial High School after serving as Associate Principal/Athletic Director of McLean County Unit 5 School District in Normal, a position she held since Aug. 2018. The previous year, Miethe was Assistant Principal at the Livingston County Special Services Unit where she developed curriculum for their secondary level programs. Miethe spent seven years in Danville District #118 as a Special Education Teacher. She was the 2016 recipient of the Most Influential Teacher Award and was the 2013-14 Golden Ruler Award winner. Miethe earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education with a Learning Behavior Specialist I Endorsement (2010) and a Master of Arts in Administration (2013) from Eastern Illinois University. She begins her appointment on July 30.

Jessica Hines Named Associate Principal/Summer School Principal at Jefferson Middle School
Hines moves into the role of Associate Principal/Summer School Principal at Jefferson Middle School after serving as Assistant Principal at the school since Aug. 2018. She joined Unit 4 in Aug. 2013 as English-Language Arts/AVID Teacher at Jefferson before moving into a role as Dean of Students from 2016-18. Hines began her teaching career in 2005 as a Language Arts Teacher/AVID Building Coordinator with Kankakee Unit 111 Schools where she spent eight years. Hines earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Illinois State University (2005) and a Master of Science in Educational Organization and Leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2017). The effective date of her new role is July 1.
