Champaign Unit 4 kindergarten lottery

Tue, 05/02/2006 - 12:00am

Six hundred fifty-five students participated in the Champaign Unit 4 kindergarten lottery in March making this the largest group of participants since the implementation of School Choice in 1998-99.  According to Hattie Paulk, Director of the Marshall K. Berner Family Information Center, an additional 39 kindergarten students have registered bringing the total number to 694.

According to Ms. Paulk all but 29 families received one of their first three choices.  As of last Thursday, 15 of the 29 have selected another Unit 4 school.  The remaining 14 families are on a waiting list for a seat in one of their chosen schools.

“The lottery numbers predict a strong kindergarten class,” said Superintendent Arthur Culver.  “We want to serve every family that registers, and I look forward to the day when all of our families can receive one of their top three choices.  We have the staff and the community to make all of our schools very attractive to parents. This lottery indicates success in our efforts to attract families,” said Culver.

Chief Financial Officer Gene Logas said that the District has capacity to seat all kindergarteners for this year.  If the enrollment trend continues, the District will have to investigate options for additional capacity.
