Champaign Schools to Host Town Hall Meeting on New Central High School Site

Wed, 09/11/2013 - 2:53pm

Champaign Community Unit School District #4 Board of Education and Administration will host a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the possible sites for a new Central High School on Monday, September 30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Mellon Administrative Center.

The Town Hall Meeting will feature a panel of community members and offer attendees the opportunity to submit questions/comments in person for open discussion. Participants will also be able to submit questions to the panel via the District’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. Board of Education members will be present, but will not run the meeting in order to encourage organic discussion amongst the panelists.

“As the Board looks to purchase land for a new Central High School, we understand that the decisions we make will impact our community for the next 100 years and beyond,” said Board of Education President Laurie Bonnett. “We are hosting a Town Hall Meeting in order to provide an opportunity for community discussion on this topic. We want to hear what factors the Board should be sure to consider when choosing a new site.”

During the 2012-2013 school year, the District contracted with public engagement firm DeJong-Richter to gather community input on the District’s aging school facilities. As part of this work, the firm also put together cost estimates to replace or renovate existing buildings. The results of that work and the recommendations of the Steering Committee are available online at the Future Facilities website. The Steering Committee also recommended that the District address renovation concerns at Centennial High School, capacity issues and needs of the three middle schools, as well as develop a plan for South Side and Dr. Howard Elementary Schools.

Using the 1% sales tax, funds were set aside starting in 2009 to purchase land for the new high school, but not for the building construction itself. Site possibilities for the new high school are available for public viewing here. Maps will also be provided at the Town Hall Meeting.
