Champaign Schools Presents Possible High School Layout at Spalding Park

At Friday’s Spalding Park Neighborhood Meeting, which drew more than 80 residents, Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand and representatives from Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group presented a possible layout for a new Central High School at Spalding Park.

The layout includes the academic and practice field spaces for a 21st Century high school for 1,700 students. Phase 1 of the possible layout does not require the acquisition of homes in the area, while Phase 2 would allow for the acquisition of homes to the North as they become available. Judah Christian School as well as some commercial spaces in the area would potentially be impacted. Offsite competition fields would also be necessary.

The Champaign Unit 4 School District is currently evaluating the possibility of building a new Central High School at one of two sites: the Spalding Park site and the site at Interstate Drive and Neil Street, purchased earlier this year.

Another community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Central High School. All residents are invited to attend.
