The Champaign Unit 4 School District has issued its 2014 Annual Report, including the letter below from Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand. Click here to view the Annual Report in its entirety.

Dear Friends of the Champaign Unit 4 School District:

I am pleased to report this year our District has made great progress in our mission to provide a world-class education to the children in our community.

As Superintendent, I am honored to work with some of the very best in our profession, without whom none of this important work would be possible. Our 1,800+ teachers, administrators, and support staff continue to be recognized among the best in our community and across the state.

Our District continues to use the Great Schools, Together strategic plan to guide our annual goals and initiatives. This year, we produced a series of six videos that highlight the ways we are working to meet our goals as a District and community. I hope you will take some time to view this video series and take a peek inside our schools: http://bit.ly/1lY1Mth.

Our schools continue to attract more students. To accommodate this growth and continue to offer our families options in our Schools of Choice program, we recently announced that we will open a 12th elementary school called the International Prep Academy this fall, which will offer K-5 students the opportunity to learn Spanish and English as part of its dual language two-way immersion program.

The community is also coming to the table to support our efforts to continue our pre-K program at the Champaign Early Childhood Center and expand Kindergarten readiness outreach. Thanks to some help from our community partners, we are reaching families earlier than ever to prepare students for that first day of school and to foster early literacy skills. We expect to build on these efforts in the years to come.

We have also continued to expand our partnerships this year in the areas of STEM education, the arts, entrepreneurship, computing, and the trades. By working in tandem with the University of Illinois, Parkland College, the Research Park, local business leaders, and the local trades, we have been able to offer unique, top-notch programming in our schools that fosters real-world skills for our students and provides exceptional professional development opportunities for our faculty.

Our graduation rates continue to increase, and we are proud to report a graduation rate for all students 3% higher than the state average and 7% higher for African-American students. We still have more work to do in this area, but we are encouraged by this progress. This year’s graduating class is continuing our District’s legacy of excellence, earning $6 million in scholarships, with many students accepted and planning to attend some of the nation’s top universities and military academies.

In order to support our educational mission, we are continuing to focus on our District’s school facilities. This fall, we will complete two more projects using funds from the county-wide 1% sales tax and will open the doors to the newly renovated Bottenfield and Robeson Elementary Schools. During the 2014-2015 school year we will conclude the planned construction with this funding stream with the renovation of Kenwood Elementary School. We are also taking some important next steps for the future of our Central and Centennial High School facilities, and will continue to provide news and updates as our work progresses this summer and into the fall.

As you can see, it has been an exciting school year for our students, staff, and families. We hope you will take some time to read through the 2014 Annual Report and learn more about the work taking place in our community schools. I truly believe there has never been a better time to be part of this community or school District. Thank you for being part of our Unit 4 family and for your ongoing support.
