Jefferson Students Program Arduinos as Part of STEM Class

In collaboration with Joe Muskin from the UIUC Mechanical Science & Engineering Department, students in Mrs. Lehr’s 8th grade STEM classes at Jefferson are working on an engineering project that involves the creation of an original poster design that includes lighting, motion and sound elements. These elements are added through the use of a programmed Arduino. Students are learning to map circuits, solder, and develop computer programs in order to use LED’s, motors, and sound sensors to bring their posters to life.

Four Unit 4 Faculty Members to Participate in nano@illinois Research Experience for Teachers

Champaign Unit 4 School District is excited to announce that four faculty members have been accepted into a prestigious nanotechnology lab program at the University of Illinois. Congratulations to teachers Geoffrey Freymuth (Jefferson Middle School), Thomas Gelsthorpe (Central High School), Julianne Lee (Central High School), and Lynn Wiedelman (Centennial High School). 

Archery Teams Excel at State Tournament

Centennial High School and Jefferson Middle School Archery Teams have each won the state title in their division at the 2015 State Championship. 

Jefferson Middle School Receives National Award for Mock Election, Rep. Ammons to Present Award

Champaign’s Jefferson Middle School is the winner of the National Association of Secondary School Principals Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teaching Democracy in conjunction with the National Student Parent Mock Election.

This fall, under the guidance of Social Studies teacher Christine Adrian, students at Jefferson participated in a school-wide mock election that educated students about civic engagement. This award recognizes the high level of participation among students as well as the innovative approach the Jefferson team took in undertaking the project. 

Jefferson Middle School Receives $5,000 Courtyard Improvement Grant

Champaign's Jefferson Middle School has received a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Toolbox for Education. Jefferson students and staff, along with community partners, will renovate the school’s underutilized courtyard to create an activ​e interdisciplinary outdoor classroom and enrich library programs. The space currently has a small pond area built a number of years ago by science teachers and prairie patch which the East Central Illinois Master Naturalists planted with the assistance of Jefferson students in the spring of 2013.
