The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently appointed Jefferson Middle School Eighth Grade Social Studies Teacher Christine Adrian to its Inclusive American History Commission. Adrian is one of eight commission appointees who teach at state schools recommended by professional teachers’ organizations and appointed by the State Superintendent of Education.

The Inclusive American History Commission was created to provide assistance to the State Board of Education in revising its social science learning standards. The Commission shall convene to do the following:

  1. Review available resources for use in school districts that reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of this state and country. The resources identified by the commission may be posted on the State Board of Education's website.
  2. Provide guidance for each learning standard developed for educators on how to ensure that instruction and content are not biased to value specific cultures, time periods, and experiences over other cultures, time periods, and experiences.
  3. Develop guidance, tools, and support for professional learning on how to locate and utilize resources for non-dominant cultural narratives and sources of historical information.

Adrian is a recipient of the 2011 National Council for the Social Studies Outstanding Middle School Teacher of the Year award and the 2010 Gilder Lehrman Institute of History Illinois History Teacher of the Year. Much of her curricular work within and outside the District has explored the idea of the struggle for justice by marginalized groups of people in United States History.
