District Announces Seven Appointments

The Champaign Unit 4 School District announced approval of seven administrative appointments during its June 14th Board of Education meeting.

Bonam Named Bottenfield Elementary Principal
Kendra Bonam was appointed Principal at Bottenfield Elementary after spending the past five years at Centennial High School as Assistant and Associate Principal. She began her career in Unit 4 in 2005 and spent nine years as a fourth grade teacher at Kenwood Elementary. Prior to joining the District, Bonam was an Assistant Team Leader at Lincoln’s Challenge Academy. She also spent four summers as a summer school teacher with the Champaign County Juvenile Detention Center.

She recently retired from the Illinois Air National Guard after 16 years as a personnel specialist. Bonam earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois and her master’s in Education Leadership from Eastern Illinois University. Her accolades include the 2007 Walmart Teacher of the Year, 2012 Top Black Achiever from EIU, and a 2018 Those Who Excel Award of Merit from the Illinois State Board of Education. She begins her Bottenfield appointment on July 1.

Hull Selected as Director of Kids Plus
Sabrina Hull was selected as Director of Kids Plus after serving as Assistant Director since September 2020. Hull’s background includes two years as the Student Success Liaison/McKinney-Vento Liaison at a high school in Renton, Wash., a year as a registrar support specialist with Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and a year as Director of Hourly and Daily SCL Services with RISE, Ltd., in Oelwein, Iowa. She also spent 10 months of service with AmeriCorps working in a Chicago public school and as Counselor in Training Program Coordinator and Head Counselor for a 4-H camp in Manteno, Ill.

Hull earned her bachelor’s degree in Community Leadership and Civic Engagement from Northern Illinois University. Her appointment begins July 1.

Lavizzo Appointed Assistant Principal at Centennial HS
Dr. Mia Lavizzo was named Assistant Principal at Centennial High School after serving as its Dean of Students. She joined Unit 4 as a school social worker at the Academic (now Novak) Academy in 2011. She returned to the district in 2017 as a school social worker at Centennial before moving into the Dean of Students role. Dr. Lavizzo served as an instructor at the collegiate level and as a technology specialist in a corporate setting. 

She holds a bachelor’s in Management Information Systems from DePaul University. Dr. Lavizzo earned both her master’s in Social Work and doctorate in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Illinois. She begins her appointment at Centennial on August 1.

Lyons Named Named Assistant Principal at Barkstall Elementary
Nathanial Lyons was named as Assistant Principal at Barkstall Elementary School after having taught second and fourth grades at Kenwood Elementary since 2017. He joined Unit 4 after four years teaching second and third grades at Signal Hill School District in Belleville, Ill.

Lyons holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Illinois State University and a master’s in Educational Leadership from Eastern Illinois University. He is a graduate of Central High School and originally from Champaign. His appointment at Barkstall begins July 1.

Mables Tabbed as Novak Academy Administrator
Christina Mables was selected as Novak Academy Administrator after spending the past two years as the Assistant Principal of Westview Elementary. She joined Unit 4 in 2017 as Assistant Principal/Summer School Principal at Garden Hills. Prior to her time in the District, Mables spent five years as a middle school math and language arts teacher with Urbana 116 Schools. 

Mables earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from Union University in Jackson, Tenn. She completed her master’s in Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership from the University of Illinois. Mables begins her appointment at Novak on July 1.

Nock Named Assistant Principal at Westview Elementary
Daniel Nock was named Assistant Principal at Westview Elementary after serving as a fourth grade teacher at Lincoln Trail Elementary in Mahomet since 2018. He began his career in 2011 as a mathematics teacher with North Ridge Middle School in Danville. After three years in that role, Nock moved to Northeast Elementary Magnet School in Danville, teaching third, fourth, and sixth grades during that time.

Nock earned his bachelor’s in Middle Level Education from Illinois State University and his master’s in Educational Leadership from Eastern Illinois University. He begins his appointment at Westview on July 1.

Seals Selected as Dean of Students at Franklin STEAM Academy
Gillian Seals was named Dean of Students at Franklin STEAM Academy after serving as a math teacher at the school since 2018. Seals began her career in 2013 as an eighth grade math teacher with Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky. She relocated to Michigan in 2015 and served as a math teacher with National Heritage Academies in Lansing, Mich., before joining Unit 4.

Seals holds a bachelor’s degree in Middle Grade Math Education from the University of Louisville and a master’s in K-12 Administration from Michigan State University. She begins her appointment at Franklin on August 1.
