CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In partnership with the United Way of Champaign County, Community Foundation of East Central Illinois, and the Rotary Responds Fund, Champaign Unit 4 Schools is helping ease some of the financial burden for families preparing to send young students back to school. With many families in need resulting from unforeseen circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, school supplies were gifted to 5,000 K-5 students enrolled countywide.

Unit 4 sought ways to support its families during these challenging times with assistance from its community partners. The Rotary Responds Fund has been in partnership with the joint United Way of Champaign County and Community Foundation of East Central Illinois Local COVID Relief Fund since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis.

“The United Way is a tremendous partner to Unit 4 and has again helped our community in a time of need,” said Unit 4 Superintendent Dr. Susan Zola. “Providing school supplies to students shows the value of community and the importance of education. We are excited about starting a new school year and hope this initiative helps lessen some financial worries for our families.”

Champaign Rotarians are donating $37,000 to provide distance-learning school supplies for children in need, including children who qualify for free and reduced lunch and children of parents who have not returned to work because of the pandemic. The initiative serves students in Champaign County, including residents of Urbana and Rantoul.

“This donation fulfills the mission of our club by responding to the needs of the families and teachers in our community during these challenging times,” said Champaign West Rotary President Christine Nevitt.

Unit 4 student volunteers and District transportation department employees loaded supplies, including markers, crayons, and paper, onto a school bus on Thursday (Aug. 13) to help deliver to schools. Volunteers from area organizations and businesses including Rotaries and Human Kinetics packed additional school supply kits on Aug. 21.
