Accelerated Placement

The Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education believes that all students across the achievement spectrum should be challenged and supported to develop their potential. For some students needing a higher level of instruction, the District has a policy for evaluating students for possible accelerated placement.

What is Accelerated Placement?

Accelerated placement is placing a student at the instructional level that best matches the student's needs by allowing access to a curriculum that is usually reserved for children who are older or in higher grades. Accelerated placement options include early entrance to kindergarten and first grade, acceleration in an individual subject, and whole grade acceleration.

Please see Accelerated Placement policy (Board Policy 630.09) for details.

Making a Referral

Any student residing in the District may be referred by a teacher, administrator, gifted education specialist, guidance counselor, school psychologist, or a parent or legal guardian to the principal for evluation for possible accelerated placement. A student may refer himself or herself through a district staff member who has knowledge of the referred student's abilities, and the principal shall obtain written permission from the student's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) to evaluate the student for possible accelerated placement.

Assessment Process

An evaluation team including District staff and parent(s) or legal guardian(s) will gather multiple sources of valid and reliable data to determine whether accelerated placement is appropriate. See Board Policy 630.09/R Administrative Procedure for more information on the assessment process.

Specifically for early entrance to kindergarten, placement will only be permitted under the following conditions:

  1. Application for early entrance to kindergarten is submitted during Schools of Choice kindergarten registration between January - March.
  2. Early entrance will only be permitted if there are available seats in the district after September 30, as students who are 5 years old on or before September 1 are given enrollment priority. The Schools of Choice process (which factors in parent choice, presence of siblings in the scohol, proximity, etc.) will not be used to determine placement of students who are 4 years old seeking early entrance. Kindergarten early entrance placement will be made after September 30 if and where seats are available.
  3. Students who are allowed early entrance into kindergarten will not be permitted to "redshirt" or be held back for an extra year in kindergarten.

Please see the Accelerated Placement policy for all information related to this process. If you have questions, please contact Jaime Roundtree, Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning, at 217-351-3752 or roundtja@u4sd.org.
