Students are offered instruction in band from 5th grade through 12th grade in all Unit 4 schools. Students will be provided with information during fall registration, and they attend a presentation of all band and string instruments. All students will be fitted for appropriate instruments, with the goal of completing the process within the first two to three weeks of school. 5th grade band is scheduled to meet during the school day, two times per week for 30 minutes of instruction per meeting. It may be possible for students to receive assistance obtaining an instrument if needed. Generally, all fifth grade band students will participate in a culminating concert in May. Some schools may provide additional performance opportunities for band students. 

Band program goals: Band students will learn Playing Techniques (hand position, poster, embouchure, articulation tonguing), Basic Instrument Care and Maintenance (oil valves, oil slides, swab instruments), and Literacy (basic simple time signatures, basic understanding of rhythms, basic understanding of note names in clef of chosen instrument, understanding of basic musical terms).




K-5 students attend general music on a weekly basis. Students explore the musical concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, meter and form through singing, playing instruments, improvisation, composition, listening, and creative movement. All general music class activities are based on the new National Core Arts Standards for music, including creating, performing, and responding to music, as well as connecting the study of music to other subject areas.


Students are offered instruction in Strings from 5th grade through 12th grade in all Unit 4 schools. 5th grade is a beginning heterogeneous string class. Middle School strings classes are grave level classes, and High School Orchestra includes Symphonic Orchestra, String Orchestra, Chamber Music, and Solo opportunities.

Strings program goals: Strings students will learn body format, right/left hand skills, aural skills, ear training, rhythmic skills, creative musicianship, music literacy ensemble skills, expressive elements, historical/cultural elements, evaluation of music and musical performances.
