Substitute Teachers
In order to qualify as a Substitute Teacher, you must be able to obtain your Substitute Teaching Authorization (SUB) through the Regional Office of Education. You do not need a substitute authorization if you hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL).

Basic Requirements for Substitute Teaching Authorization: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree

Option 1
If you intend to work as a substitute in multiple area districts (not just with Unit 4), you must have a Substitute Teacher Authorization document from the Regional Office of Education (ROE). You will need to complete all steps in the Application Process for Substitute Teaching License.

Option 2
If you only intend to work as a substitute with Unit 4 and do not already hold a valid PEL or Substitute Teaching Authorization, you should complete steps 1-4 in the Application Process for Substitute Teaching License section.

Please Note: The District does NOT hire Substitute Teachers under a Short-Term Substitute License. Candidates with this license are encouraged to apply for a Teacher’s Aide position instead.

Substitute Teacher Aides
In order to qualify as a Substitute Teacher Aide, you must be able to obtain your Paraprofessional License through the Regional Office of Education. For any questions regarding the licensure process, please visit this page.
