AVID

We are pleased to announce that Edison Middle School was officially revalidated as a National Demonstration School by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This is an honor that less than 300 schools hold in the country.

Being a National AVID Demonstration School means that Edison is able to demonstrate rigorous instructional practices across all of its spaces. Part of this includes using WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) as the instructional framework.

“AVID is a system of support that helps prepare students in the academic middle for college, career, and life readiness,” stated Dr. Mykah Jackson, Unit 4’s Director of College and Career Readiness. “AVID encourages students to participate in advanced core classes as well as an elective class designed to strengthen their social, cultural, and academic skills and knowledge. I applaud the hard work that our staff and students have done to receive this great achievement.”

“This isn't just another thing for us, but rather ensuring our spaces are structured in a way to allow for deep student learning,” added Edison Principal Angie Schoonover. “It is why we have been so passionate about providing training around the AVID methodology to all of our staff. We understand incorporating these methods takes time and persistence, but we have seen some incredible things while observing students in our teachers' classrooms who are implementing strategies with fidelity.”

Unit 4 Schools currently has seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools (Bottenfield, Robeson, IPA, Garden Hills, Booker T. Washington, Barkstall, Stratton, Jefferson, Edison, Franklin, Central, and Centennial) officially implementing the AVID system of support. Unit 4 houses three out of four National AVID Demonstration Sites (Jefferson, Franklin, Edison).
