Hispanic Heritage Month Activity List

Hispanic Heritage Month is a wonderful opportunity for students of all ages to celebrate and learn about the cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic communities. From creative crafts and music to exploring food traditions and researching inspiring leaders, these activities are designed to engage students at every grade level in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.

Pre-K Activity

Sugar Skull Paper Puppet

Make a sugar skull paper puppet using a simple printable template, colourful markers, a hole punch, and brads to make parts move. It introduces them to Día de los Muertos imagery in a gentle, fun way.

Kindergarten-3rd Grade Activity

Music & Movement: Latin American Songs and Dance
Introduce children to Latin music: Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, or folk dances from various Hispanic cultures. Use videos, songs with Spanish and English lyrics, then let kids try dance steps or rhythm games.

4th-5th Grade Activity

Cultural Recipe Exploration & Cooking Demo
Students research traditional recipes from Hispanic countries. They can explore ingredients, origins, and try cooking (with parental supervision). It opens up discussion of geography, history, migration, and what ingredients tell about culture.

Middle/High School

Historical Figures & Social Justice Research & Presentation
Students pick one or more Hispanic historical figures or movements and research their lives, contributions, and the context in which they lived. They can prepare a multimedia presentation that includes how that person’s work relates to issues today. This encourages critical thinking, research skills, and connecting past and present.
